By spending heavily on research and development, Korea has gone from being one of the poorest countries in the world to a technology leader over the past 30 years. For example, Korea already publishes more papers than Germany in the areas of the Internet of Things or digital mobility technologies and can compete with the USA in the number of patents in microelectronics.

This report on Korea is part of a series on developments in research and innovation in the Asia-Pacific region. Asia-Pacific is the third leading region in the world for knowledge production and innovation, after Europe and North America. Under the term 'Asia-Pacific Research Area' (APRA), the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has therefore been monitoring the development of science and research as well as corresponding political programmes and measures in these countries for more than ten years.

Since 2018, the APRA-PM has been providing information on current developments within APRA and on political goals of the individual countries.

The monitoring is carried out on behalf of the BMBF by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI, the Leibniz Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). DLR Projektträger supports the BMBF and is the publisher of the series.
